The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is looking to fill a Cannabis Task Force Proficiency Testing Workgroup Lead Chemist & Lab Auditor (Chemist4) (In Training) position.

This position is located in our Headquarters building in Lacey, WA.

The Cannabis Task Force Proficiency Testing Workgroup Lead Chemist & Lab Auditor position contributes to the program and agency missions by leading the proficiency testing workgroup for the Cannabis Science Task Force and making recommendations to the legislature for proficiency testing in order to assure that cannabis laboratories are capable of providing accurate and defensible analytical data and conducting laboratory audits.

We are looking for chemists with expertise in organics who possess excellent communication and coordination skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and the creativity to help develop lab quality standards for our state’s emergent cannabis industry.

Duties

The Environmental Assessment Program is the science arm of our agency.

Our scientists measure and analyze environmental conditions.

We use this data to evaluate and communicate environmental threats and to guide the state’s environmental policy decisions.

Some Of The Key Work Activities Of The Cannabis Task Force Proficiency Testing Workgroup Lead Chemist & Lab Auditor Position Are

  • Leads a workgroup of scientists within the Cannabis Science Task Force from government and private laboratories in defining a proficiency testing program for Washington cannabis laboratories.
  • Works with the State’s lab accreditation team and serve as the organics specialist on audits.
  • Contributes to a report to the legislature that includes the findings and recommendations for a proficiency testing program for pesticides in plants for cannabis product testing laboratories.
  • Contributes to a report to the legislature that includes the findings and recommendations for a proficiency testing program for heavy metals and potency in plants for cannabis product testing laboratories.
  • Prepares detailed reports of audit findings and recommends corrective actions to improve laboratory procedures.
  • Helps define lab quality standards for cannabis laboratories for the state of Washington.

This position provides a unique opportunity to work in a leadership role as part of the State’s Cannabis Science Task Force.

This position will interact with a wide-range of stakeholders including executive-level government officials, scientists from state agencies and private labs, and the agency’s legislative liaisons.

This position will play a critical role in defining the state’s cannabis laboratory quality standards.

This position will be stationed at Ecology’s headquarters office in Lacey, WA and will spend up to 2 days / week with the lab accreditation team in Port Orchard, WA.

Some Information About The Team

This position will work with a great team of scientists who are dedicated to providing quality data to guide our state’s regulatory decisions.

This recruitment will remain open until filled. The initial screening will be October 30, 2019. Please Note: This is a project position that will end on December 31, 2021.Please do NOT include your salary history. Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion, if applicable.
 Qualifications Required Qualifications:

At the Chemist 3 level: pay range 60 $4,953 – $6,496 per month.

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry and four years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.

OR

Two years of experience as a Chemist 2 with the Department of Ecology.

NOTE: A Master’s degree will substitute for two years of the required experience or a Ph.D. degree will substitute for three years of the required experience provided a Bachelor’s degree and the required college-level chemistry have been achieved.

At the Chemist 4 level: pay range 66 $5,741 – $7,535 per month.

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry and six years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory including at least one year of experience leading or supervising professional chemists.

OR

One year of experience as a Chemist 3 with the Department of Ecology.

NOTE: A Master’s degree will substitute for two years of the required experience or a Ph.D. degree will substitute for three years of the required experience provided a Bachelor’s degree and the required college-level chemistry have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

Experience performing organics chemistry in an analytical lab. Experience with pesticide analysis, pesticide methods, and pesticide method validation.
