Food is Free

Learn to build a raised bed garden and grow enough food for your neighborhood this season

Regular readers are likely familiar with the Food Is Free Project I work with in Tacoma, Washington. We built 8 raised beds with the assistance of David Thompson, the Urban Farmer, and other volunteers last year and were able to feed many neighbors lots of fresh, free, organic fruits and vegetables in an urban area.

Needless to say, the garden was a hit last year and absolutely necessary this year. I wrote about the project last year for the Tacoma Weekly when we installed our garden at 15th and South L Street at this link.

This season, David has installed most gardens himself due to the pandemic and practicing social distancing, so I was thrilled to discover he has now created a how-to video (available at this Youtube link), so readers can learn how to build their own raised beds.

The entire concept of take what you can share and leave what you can spare is the basis of the project and I am proud to be a member of a group giving to our community.

Looking for an established garden for inspiration? All the gardens we have worked with can be located easily – read this post on how and get growing!
